Invisalign vs braces

Once upon a time, the only option for straightening and re‑aligning teeth was traditional braces, meaning many people chose to forgo treatment. Traditional braces are obvious in your mouth and can leave you feeling self‑conscious during treatment.

However, Invisalign braces offer an effective way to get great results without having to have all of that metal, wire and rubber bands in your mouth. Invisalign aligners are made from a transparent material that is designed to be invisible when you smile. The aligners are also custom‑fitted to your teeth using advanced imaging technology to ensure they are as comfortable as possible.

Using 3D scans, your dentist will be able to map out your treatment plan from start to finish and let you see how your smile will look after treatment using Ace Dental’s iTero scanner.

What exactly is Invisalign and how does it work?

Traditional braces work by exerting gentle pressure on your teeth to encourage them to move into the correct position. Invisalign works on the same principles but is a more comfortable, convenient way.

Invisalign aligners, or trays, are designed to be worn until each one has gradually shifted your teeth further into the optimum position. You then move on to the next aligner in your Invisalign treatment until your teeth are where they should be.

What are the key benefits of Invisalign?

  • Being nearly invisible, Invisalign is one of the most discreet systems you can choose.
  • You can put in your aligners and go about your day with confidence, whether you are at home, work or school.
  • They are removable: unlike conventional braces, you can take your aligners out while eating or when brushing your teeth, for maximum comfort and hygiene.
  • Unlike metal braces, they are made with smooth edges for a more comfortable feeling.
  • They generally require less time at the dentist and fewer appointments.
  • Your treatment will be customised to you so your aligners are changed for the quickest, best results.
  • Straight teeth are better for your dental health as they are easier to keep clean.
  • After treatment, you can’t beat the feeling of confidence a straighter smile will give you.

What can I expect during treatment?

First, you will have a consultation to ensure that Invisalign is the right option for you before your dentist takes images, impressions and X‑rays of your teeth. This information will be sent to Invisalign so that your custom aligners can be made.

Once your aligners are ready, you will be asked to make an appointment with your dentist to make sure they fit correctly. Your dentist will explain to you how to use the system effectively.

You will receive a set of aligners, one for each stage of your treatment process. You will wear each aligner for somewhere between 20 and 22 hours per day for around two weeks. After that, you will switch to the next aligner in the series. Regular follow‑up sessions with your dentist will allow them to monitor your progress.

How long will it take Invisalign to work?

Everyone is different. The length of time it takes for you to achieve the results you want will vary depending on how straight your teeth were when you started the treatment, as well as whether you are disciplined about wearing your aligners for the correct amount of time each day.

It could be as short a space of time as six months before you begin to see results, with around 12 to 18 months to complete treatment.

How do I maintain my smile?

Like other orthodontic treatments, you will need to wear a retainer overnight following treatment with Invisalign to make sure your teeth don’t shift back into their original position. Your dentist will provide you with a special Invisalign retainer.

"My teeth are fantastic, my confidence is SKY HIGH"

United Smile Centres.....Being afraid of dentists for so many years of my life, I had let go of my teeth to the point I was so embarressed to go out and socialise with friends, family and my work started to get affected due to my confidence issues.I then plucked up the courage to ring United Smile Centres and spoke to a lovely girl who put me at ease immediately on the phone......The day of my FREE consultation I was so nervous and scared that I almost didnt attend my appointment, but found the confidence to come in as I wanted to be ME again. Can I say what a fantastic team United Smile Centres have, they held my hand every step of the way.Having met the team a few times before the surgery I had built up enough trust to go ahead with this life changing procedure. I felt very safe throughout the treatment. My teeth are fantastic, my confidence is SKY HIGH and the best bit is I can laugh, giggle and smile without a care in the WORLD!!

Frequently asked questions about Invisalign® and clear aligners.

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign clear aligners?

Most adults and teens with mild to moderate crowding or spacing are suitable. However, the best way to find out is through a consultation where your dentist will assess your bite and discuss your goals. At our Marylebone clinic we’ll look at your bite, lifestyle and expectations to see if aligners are right for you.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Treatment times vary, but most people see results within 6–18 months depending on the complexity of their case. In our Marylebone practice in Central London, some patients finish treatment in as little as six months while others with more complex needs take up to a year and a half.

Do clear aligners hurt?

You may feel mild pressure when you start a new tray, but it’s generally more comfortable than traditional braces. Any discomfort usually subsides after a few days. Our Central London patients often tell us they adjust quickly and can get on with their day without worrying about visible wires.

How often should I wear my aligners?

For best results wear your aligners for 20–22 hours per day, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and to brush and floss your teeth. Whether you’re heading from Hyde Park to Regent’s Park or commuting into Soho, you should keep your aligners in as much as possible.

How much does Invisalign cost at Ace Dental?

Fees vary depending on your personalised treatment plan. We offer 0% finance and flexible payment options after your free consultation so you can spread the cost. Our Marylebone practice on Wimpole Street provides competitive pricing for Central London residents.

How do I care for my aligners and teeth during treatment?

Rinse your aligners in lukewarm water, brush them gently with a soft toothbrush, and clean your teeth after meals. Avoid hot drinks while wearing aligners, and store them safely when not in your mouth. If you’re eating out in Paddington or Bond Street, carry your aligner case with you so they stay safe when removed.

Why do busy professionals in Marylebone choose clear aligners over braces?

Many of our patients work in Central London and appreciate that clear aligners blend into a hectic schedule. They’re discreet for meetings, removable for meals or coffee breaks, and require fewer appointments than traditional braces. If you’re based in Marylebone, Soho or Westminster and want a straighter smile without the hassle of visible brackets, clear aligners are designed for you.

After completing your aligner treatment, you might consider enhancing your smile further with teeth whitening, camouflaging imperfections with veneers, or designing a comprehensive smile makeover. For those looking for a more traditional approach, fixed braces remain an option. Patients with missing teeth may benefit from our dental implants or full mouth implants services.
