Smile makeover: how veneers and general dentistry work together

A proper smile makeover starts with a question, not a treatment: what's actually going on in your mouth, and what combination of care will genuinely get you the result you want? Sometimes that's veneers alone. Often, it's veneers alongside general dentistry work that needs doing first.

"Smile makeover" gets used as a marketing term so often that it's lost some of its meaning. Search for it and you'll mostly find pages showing dramatic before-and-after veneer photos, as if a smile makeover is simply code for "lots of veneers." It usually isn't, or at least it shouldn't be.

Key takeaways

‍

  • A smile makeover is a tailored plan, not a single fixed treatment
  • General dentistry issues, such as decay or gum health, are usually addressed before cosmetic work begins
  • Combining the two in one plan tends to produce longer-lasting results than veneers alone
  • Your plan is built around your goals in a Zoom consultation, not decided for you in advance

Why we don't lead with "veneers for everyone"

‍

At our Wimpole Street practice, we deliberately don't push a single named product or a set package at every patient who mentions wanting a better smile. Everyone's mouth is different, and pigeonholing someone into "the veneers package" before we've even looked at their teeth tends to produce worse outcomes, not better ones.

Instead, the process starts with a conversation about what you want to change and why. Some patients want a completely different shape or colour of tooth. Others just want their smile to look healthier and more even without anything dramatic. Both are valid starting points, and they can lead to quite different plans.

‍

The general dentistry work that often comes first

‍

Here's the part that gets left out of most smile makeover marketing: cosmetic work sits on top of the foundation underneath it, and if that foundation isn't solid, the cosmetic result won't last. Before any veneers are prepared, we check for:

  • Untreated decay, which needs addressing regardless of cosmetic plans
  • Gum health, since veneers placed over inflamed or receding gums won't look right and may fail early
  • Bite alignment, because veneers placed on an uneven bite can chip or wear unevenly
  • General wear or previous dental work that might affect how new veneers sit

‍

If any of these come up, we'll build them into your plan as a first phase. It might mean your smile makeover takes an extra few weeks, but it means the veneers you end up with are built on teeth and gums that can actually support them long term.

‍

A combined plan in practice

‍

A typical combined plan might look like this: a comprehensive check-up and clean first, a small filling replaced where an old one has started to fail, then porcelain veneers on the front teeth once the groundwork is solid. Each stage builds on the last rather than happening in isolation.

It's a different pace to the "veneers in a week" style of marketing you'll see elsewhere, but the results tend to hold up considerably better, because nothing was rushed past a problem that needed fixing first.

‍

Seeing your result before committing

‍

Once your plan is agreed, we can use your digital scan to show you a preview of what your new smile could look like. This isn't a guarantee of the exact final result, but it gives you a genuinely useful sense of shape, size and shade before any preparation work begins on your teeth.

Dr Adarsh Thanki takes a particular interest in this side of planning, working from what actually suits your face rather than defaulting to a uniform look. If you've seen veneers elsewhere that looked slightly artificial or too uniformly white, that's usually a planning issue rather than an inevitable outcome of the treatment itself.

‍

Cost of a combined smile makeover plan

‍

Because a combined plan varies so much depending on what general dentistry work is needed alongside cosmetic treatment, we can't give a figure without an assessment. As a guide, cosmetic treatment costs start from £1,000, with 0% finance available over 12 months through Tabeo, and longer payment terms available for larger combined plans.

‍

Starting your smile makeover

‍

The first step is the same as any other treatment here: a free Zoom consultation to talk through what you want and get an honest view of what's realistic. If general dentistry work needs to happen first, we'll tell you that upfront, not after veneers have already been fitted.

‍

Frequently asked questions

‍

Do I need general dentistry work before I can get veneers?

Not always, but it's common. If your assessment finds decay, gum issues or bite problems, we'll usually recommend addressing these first so your veneers have a solid, healthy foundation.

How long does a full smile makeover take?

It depends entirely on what your plan involves. A straightforward veneers case might be completed within a few weeks; a combined plan involving general dentistry work first will take longer, and your written treatment plan will set out a realistic timeline.

Will my smile makeover look natural or obviously "done"?

That's entirely up to the plan we agree together. If you want a subtle, natural result, that's what we design towards; a uniform, highly artificial look is a choice, not an unavoidable side effect of veneers.

Can I see a preview of my new smile before treatment starts?

Yes. Using your digital scan, we can show you a preview of shape, size and shade so you have a clear sense of the intended outcome before any preparation work begins.

Most dental check-ups are over before they really start. Fifteen minutes of stocktaking, a quick polish, a glance around, and you're back on the street. It works as a routine; it doesn't really work as a check.
